The measurement of electrical stability (ES) is to apply a sinusoidal electrical signal with gradually rising voltage to a pair of parallel plate electrodes immersed in drilling fluid. The resulting current is very weak until it reaches a critical voltage, after which the current intensity rises sharply.
The tester complies with the electrical stability test procedure described in API rp13b-2 Recommended Practice for field testing of oil-based drilling fluid. The instrument is mainly composed of an instrument box, test body, electrode, power adapter and glass beaker. It is accurate, simple and portable. The influence of the chemical composition and shear history of drilling fluid on the absolute value of ES is very complex.

The Electrical Stability Tester (DWY-2) is a sine wave instrument manufactured in accordance with the American Petroleum Institute (API) recommended Practice Standard Procedures for Field Testing of Oil Drilling Fluids 13B-2. It's accurate, simple and portable. Used for conventional field and laboratory measurements of relative electrical strength of drilling fluids with continuous oil phases. Dwy-2 tester consists of test instrument and probe, which is powered by four common 9-volt alkaline batteries. Dielectric breakdown voltage is the key to conductive drilling fluid. The battery's DC power supply provides an AC voltage to the electrodes at low frequencies.
The size of the electrical stability tester, the spacing between electrodes, and the current have all been standardized. The two electrodes are the same size, 0.061 inches apart; The current size is set as 61uA, the frequency of the continuously increasing voltage is fixed at 340 ±10Hz, and the sine wave with the continuously increasing amplitude is always loaded on the electrode. The electrodes are immersed in drilling fluid. If the current between the electrodes starts to run and increases to 61uA, the voltage automatically stops growing and the peak voltage reading stabilizes. The peak voltage is recorded and the breakdown voltage of the dielectric is displayed.
The electrical stability value will decrease with increasing test temperature, and the recommended API test temperature is 120± 5 ° F (49± 3 ° C). The chemical composition and shear process of drilling fluid control the absolute value of DWY-2.
3. Product operate of Electrical Stability Tester (EST) Model 194-02
1). Filter the bulk solids in the sample with a 12-well test sieve or Markov funnel, and place the sample in a heated beaker or a heated viscosity cup.
2). Adjust and keep the container and sample temperature at 50±2℃, (120±5℉).
Note: Do not connect the electrode probe to the instrument!
3). Thoroughly wipe the electrode probe with a paper towel, and wipe several times between the electrodes.
4). With the probe to stir the oil base, to ensure that it can be used in the mud, if the oil base is not suitable, other oil or reagent (such as isopropyl alcohol) can also, before the test, wipe and dry the probe.
Agitate with the probe for at least 10 seconds and use a thermometer to ensure the solution temperature is 50±2℃ (120±5℉). Note: Do not move the electrode probe during the test!
Press the "test" button and the voltage starts to rise automatically. Do not move the probe during the test. The voltage stops increasing when the breakdown voltage is reached, at which point the voltage value is recorded as the dielectric breakdown voltage (electrical stability reading).
Note: If the instrument voltage reading is greater than 2000V, the breakdown voltage of this solution sample exceeds 2025±25V (peak).
Record and average the electrical stability of oil-based mud from two or more tests.
Note: this instrument will retain the reading from the last test. Press the reset button again to reset the reading to zero and start the next test.
